Working with multiple patterns can be tricky. However, there are a few guidelines you can follow to ensure that your patterns flow together well without clashing.
Scale your patterns:
- Patterns should be different sizes to coordinate. If you have a large bold pattern you could pair it with a medium and small pattern.
Choose coordinating colors:
- Patterns should incorporate at least one color from another pattern. Using the background color of one pattern as the design color can give it a nice contrast.
- Pulling out a bold color from a large pattern and using that color as an accent can show some interest.
Use different pattern types:
- Using different line types such as geometric, minimal or free-flowing can show interesting variation while pulling the patterns in with colors.
Don’t let patterns scare you!
